Local entrepreneurs like Frank Fleischer are getting a little help from the Contract Services Division of Goodwill Industries of Akron to develop new and innovative products. In 2009, the division worked with inventors and businesses to turn nearly 50 ideas into new products. Specializing in orthopedic and functional footwear for nearly 50 years, Frank was one of the very first certified Pedorthists in America. He found that he had trouble sleeping with the pain of his knees touching together and the discomfort of his hips at an abnormal oblique position. He was told by his doctor to put a pillow between his legs. This led to Frank’s invention – the “Nee-Z-eeZ,” a pillow designed to be placed between your knees when you sleep to keep your back aligned and to reduce tension. “Some years ago, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I got tired of sticking a pillow between my legs at night so that I could sleep more comfortably, because I constantly had to wake up and re-position it. Hence the Nee-Z-eeZ,” said Frank. He came to Goodwill with his idea, and needed a prototype to show retailers. Sewing Manager Al Sardelle worked with Frank and Goodwill’s sewing staff to create numerous versions of the pillow, each an improvement on the previous. Together they selected fabrics, tested Velcro and zipper options, and in six months, the “Nee-Z-eeZ” was ready for the marketplace. We are ready to assist you!
